The dark side of ChatGPT and AI

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock…

you will have heard of ChatGPT. The internet is literally “buzzing”.

As an IT contractor you will not be a stranger to the impact of technological advancements.

However, this change feels different. It feels “game-changing”. Its potential to revolutionise seemingly everything we do with its AI capabilities is almost beyond belief. And more than a little bit scary at the same time.

Many are already jumping on the bandwagon to use ChatGPT for everything from generating content to automating mundane tasks.

The possibilities seem to be endless. This leads to a bigger question which is “what risks are involved with this new technology?”

Before we go there though let’s first look at some of the cool stuff ChatGPT can do.

The Benefits of ChatGPT

ChatGPT is a machine learning model that uses natural language processing to generate human-like responses to prompts. This technology has enormous potential. One of the most common uses for ChatGPT is to feed it prompts and have it generate content, which can be used to shorten research, help write marketing content,  produce high-quality emails, write music, create graphics, debug code. The list of its abilities seems to not have an end.

In addition to its content-generating capabilities, ChatGPT can also be used to automate tasks, for example, Buzzfeed recently announced that it plans to use AI and ChatGPT to generate content for its platform, leading to an uptick in its share price.

As an IT contractor, you can expect more businesses to adopt this technology to stay competitive in their respective industries.

However it is not all “unicorns and rainbows”. There is a dark side to be aware of…

The Dark Side of ChatGPT and AI Technology

Of course, it is not just the good guys that are looking at ways that ChatGPT can help them, hackers and organised crime are always looking for ways to innovate and exploit new technology. Especially if there is a buck to be made.

Unfortunately, ChatGPT provides an excellent platform for these bad actors to automate tasks like creating phishing emails and writing malware to infect end-users’ systems.

Check Point Research recently tested the capabilities of ChatGPT to be used maliciously and found that it could easily craft phishing emails that could infect a recipient’s system. You can read more about it here. It is worth reading.

The future sounds both exciting and scary at the same time.
