The budget and you – Its impact on IT Contractors

If you’ve kept an eye on the 2024 Federal Budget coverage, you’re no doubt aware of one announcement likely to impact IT Contractors –the Federal Government’s shift towards reducing its reliance on them.

While this will understandably ring alarm bells, a deeper dive into the budget paints a more positive picture for IT professionals here in Canberra: increased funding in digital solutions, cybersecurity, and service delivery enhancements to vital platforms are just some of the investments that will require IT expertise. Below we take a look at the main points that would  impact IT contractors.

Increased Funding for Services Australia

An additional $1.8 billion over the next three years has been allocated to Services Australia to enhance staffing and technology needs. This funding is expected to create 3000 positions, replacing work outsourced to call centres and reducing claim processing times.

Permanent Funding for myGov Platform

The digital service platform myGov has secured $630 million over four years, with $145 million per year ongoing. This funding will support significant upgrades, including a personalised security dashboard and improved encryption.

Focus on Cybersecurity

The budget allocates $288 million over four years to improve encryption and technology, supporting the roll-out of a digital ID scheme. Additionally, the Australian Federal Police will receive funding for cyber investigations and protective security services.

Investments in APS Digital Solutions

The budget invests in digital solutions across various APS agencies to enhance service delivery and security. This includes funding for the Australian Digital Health Agency to improve My Health Record and other digital health initiatives.

Opportunities in Public Service Job Growth

The budget shows an increase of 17,289 public sector jobs, with 12,000+ allocated for this year. The government is converting almost 9000 external APS workers into public service employees, aiming to save $1 billion over four years.

Digital Health and Services

Funding for the Australian Digital Health Agency includes new digital solutions to improve service delivery and increase the growth of My Health Record.

Importantly don’t forget that ‘the only constant in life in change’ and that rings true for many of us right now. Staying informed and adapting to changes will be crucial for success in the evolving IT Contracting landscape, allowing you to take advantage of the many opportunities the IT world provides.
